Monkstown International Puppet Festival Unveils First Year Line-Up
You would be a muppet to miss out on the first Monkstown International Puppet Festival (MIPF) scheduled for September 21.
Taking place in the Dublin suburb, MIPF is filled to the brim with Irish and international puppet legends, as well as the next generation of puppeteers. In terms of the former, icons of Irish childhood life; the Lambert Puppet Theatre and Wanderly Wagon will be attending.
Master puppeteers Louise Gold and Nigel Plaskitt will be there too. Gold started her career at the Jim Henson studio as none other than one of The Muppets puppeteers. She was also one of the core performers on Netflix’s prequel series to film The Dark Crystal.
Gold also worked on Spitting Image with Plaskitt. His other credits include Anglo The Musical and Avenue Q, as well as being the animation director for Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and on the musical Doctor Dolittle with Phillip Schofield.
Speaking at the festival launch, Festival Director Roger Duggan said “Puppetry offers all ages and families opportunities to engage, from formal talks to workshops, family shows and late evening acts. Monkstown has a heritage of puppetry, and is synonymous in people’s minds with it. There is strong community buy in for the project. Venues, community groups and the public have offered strong support from the outset.”
Other important names booked for the festival include Dublin-based puppet improvisational group Fur City and the Czech Republic’s Karromato. Meanwhile, Kettle Fish Productions, Animism and the Hot Water Bottle Theatre Company will all be putting on shows.
Meanwhile, no puppet festival would be complete without a traditional Punch and Judy show. On top of all this, more acts are to be announced over the coming months.
