The Ghostbus is Dublin’s original spooky bus ride through Ireland’s capital. The world-famous ghoulish tour is now in its 21st year and has launched a service especially designed for kids under 14: the Ghostbus Kids Tour.
The new tour takes place in the original Ghostbus, complete with a maze-like eerie corridor downstairs. This eventually leads passengers (after a few frights) to the upstairs section where the event begins. The bus is designed in the same fashion as a Victorian Theatre; decked in rich blood-red velvet curtains and black leather seats with seatbelts to keep all who dare enter safe but definitely spooked.
Here is where you meet a 500-year-old Irish ghost who will be your lively (but dead) tour guide for the day. The spirit will bring guests around Dublin’s haunted streets. From the bus, attendees can peer below at those going about their day with no idea of the horrific and bloody crimes committed right beneath their feet.
The tour is kept suitably scary and entertaining while simultaneously having an educational angle. Guides will cover Dublin’s incredible gothic and horror literary history all the way from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to the more contemporary Darren Shan. The tour attendees are then spilt into different teams and quizzed on all the macabre tales of Dublin’s darkest secrets.
Dublin is full of gruesome and spooky histories. However, the tour is more focused on fun and laughter than scaring. Kids will learn all about the dark history of the city as well as some lesser known tales of a horridly humorous nature. There will be games throughout the tour as well as sightseeing all around the haunted streets and laneways.
The Ghostbus Kids Tour runs every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 11.00, 13.00 and 15.30 during June, July and August and every Saturday from September to May. Children must be accompanied by an adult with a maximum of 6 kids per accompanying adult. Tours will depart from Bus Stop 271, at the junction of O’Connell Street and Abbey Street.
