Dublin Smartphone Film Festival To Take Place This Month

Now in its second year, the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival is set to take place January 26 at Teeling Whiskey Distillery, Merchant’s Quay, Dublin 8.

The festival celebrates work from Ireland and abroad shot on smartphones and tablets. At a time when expensive technology is no longer a barrier to creativity and an increasing number of directors are using iPhones to produce movies cheaper and faster, the Irish event gives smartphone filmmakers a platform to exhibit their work.

Kicking off at 7:30, there will be batch of short film screenings. Following these at 10.00, there will be an award service featuring the following categories: Grand Jury Prize, Best 360/VR Film. Best Irish Film, Best Animation, Best Fiction, Best Music Video and Best Documentary. The evening will then conclude with a networking event for smartphone filmmakers.

“The mobile phone has expanded the scope and freedom for filmmakers, providing limitless possibilities in the palm of your hand,” says the festival in a statement. In recent years, critically acclaimed movies such as Tangerine and Unsane were shot on iPhones – the latter receiving a wide release in cinemas across the world.
