Coming Up This Month at The Gaiety Theatre

 Frank Pig Says Hello

Twenty-five years on, Pat McCabe’s Frank Pig Says Hello returns this September to twenty theatres across Ireland, in a new touring production that brilliantly captures the legendary original. Starting at the Gaiety Theatre Dublin, moving to a community venue in McCabe’s hometown of Clones and then traversing the length and breadth of the country, the tour will bring one of the great classics of modern Irish theatre to a new generation of audiences.

Frank Pig Says Hello tells the desperately funny and tragic story of the life of Francie Brady growing up in a small Irish town in the 1960s and his descent towards a brutal act that shocks his community. The original production coincided with McCabe’s Booker-winning novel of the same story entitled “The Butcher Boy”.  The play distils Francie’s infamous narrative into a riveting evening of outstanding theatre.

Featuring mesmerising performances by two actors, Darragh Byrne and John Ruddy, Frank Pig is regarded as the most vivid, hilarious and heartbreaking evocation ever seen onstage of an Irish childhood gone wrong.  Pat McCabe and Joe O’Byrne collaborated on the original Frank Pig Says Hello production for the 1992 Dublin Theatre Festival where it won Best Production, before embarking on a world tour that began in Clones, Co. Monaghan and concluded in New York. Set design on this production is by leading Irish artist Robert Ballagh.

Girls and Dolls

Girls and Dolls, the stunning debut play from Lisa McGee, Writer/Producer of smash hit TV comedy Derry Girls will play a limited run at The Gaiety Theatre from 11th-15th September.

Set in Derry in 1980 it features Emma and Clare, two best friends who are thick as thieves – skipping, chasing, playing in the park. But the terrible events of that summer would tear their lives apart, binding them together forever. As adults they obsessively replay past events and incidents. Could anything have been done to change them?

For Emma and Clare it was the summer they met at the swings, the summer they built a tree house and the summer a young mother and her infant daughter moved into number fourteen. Now in their thirties, Emma and Clare struggle to come to terms with the chain of devastating events that began that summer.

Hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure.
